Jacobs & Co, Steakhouse, Toronto

Jacobs & Co, Steakhouse, Toronto, Canada

My favored steakhouse in Toronto always has been Barberian’s (http://www.barberians.com/). Not only because of its great name, but because of some very good steaks, great wines and some personal stories which are related strongly to this place. Everything I thought is more or less unique as for instance the impressive huge wine selection and of course the meat. But, I need to be honest; the Barberian is a very vintage and even conservative place.

Nobelhart & Schmutzig, Restaurant, Berlin

Nobelhart & Schmutzig, Restaurant, Berlin, Germany

6,5 points

It took me a while upon this review. I slowly got my thoughts and impression into something you can read: My master of wine – Billy Wagner – and his partner Micha Schäffer succeeded generating a remarkably positive hype about their new restaurant called Nobelhart & Schmutzig. Not everyone has expected this as it is an unorthodox but dogmatic concept which they are following. Without real compromises, the sitting arrangement, the way of cooking and obviously the selection of wine is unique in Berlin! It takes you almost your breath when you get into the place first time so inspiring and even for Berlin standards unconventional it is. Some critics already wrote that it nuts to need ringing the bell to get access to restaurant as the door is locked. This indeed is pretty seldom in Berlin but probably also a concession to the interior because a wall between entrance and the sitting areas provide snugness for those who otherwise would have the door in their back. 28 seats along a three side counter which goes around an open kitchen and the bar. 14 seats on big table. Cool music out of gramophone records…

Venissa, Restaurant and Vineyard, Marzzorbo

Venissa, Restaurant and Vineyard, Marzzorbo (Venice), Italy

8 points

What a remarkable restaurant! I should have heard about this one, but never did. Recommended along many other awarded restaurants of Venice the description of it made me curious and let you in the impression visiting a friendly place. I did not put attention on the location and thought it should be in Venice. The concierge of my hotel told me that I would need either ca. 1,5h by the water bus or 30 – 40 minutes by water taxi.

The restaurant is located on another island of the Venice Laguna called Marzzorbo close to Burano. It is not only a restaurant but also small vineyard. You can even rent a room for some nights – probably without the classic hotel service certainly a great option for another stay.

Il Pane e le Rose, Restaurant, Berlin

Restaurant, Il Pane e le Rose or as everyone in Berlin knows it: Brot und Rosen, Berlin, Germany

Every third guest of this place probably is patron and from the direct neighborhood. Located along a street which is the border between a lovely park (Friedrichshainer Volkspark) and Berlin sub-district Bötzowviertel this restaurant faces a lot of competition as mentioned “Viertel” – area – is rich of different restaurants, bars and inns.

Jean des Sables, Restaurant in Hossegor

Jean des Sables, Restaurant in Hossegor, France

Beautiful location, great architectonic and stylish building above the beach of Hossegor (30-40 km in the North of Biarritz) – so your expectation are reasonable high as the internet is full of some ecommendations, too.

Restaurant Embassy, Karlovy Vary

Restaurant Embassy, Karlovy Vary, Czech Repbulic

Another prestigious restaurant in Karlovy Vary is called Embassy. Similar to the restaurant Promenada on which I recently wrote also a review (https://avdwineandfood.wordpress.com/2015/07/07/restaurace-promenada-karlovy-vary/) Embassy is a hot-spot for prominent and VIPs of Czech Republic. Many international stars have been at this place, too, since it is one of “the” Karlovy Vary Film Festival restaurants.

Wonderful location – wonderful food!

This is actually what would be enough to describe the restaurant Belvedere. The restaurant’s home is the new orangery in the Royal Lazienki Park in the middle of Warsaw.

Restaurant Rotisserie Weingrün, Berlin

Restaurant Rotisserie Weingrün, Berlin, Germany

Almost everywhere you can find chicken on a menu at a café, fast food place or any restaurant. Except it is an extraordinary location or perhaps Michelin Star restaurant the typical selection of chicken contains breast, filet and sometimes chicken wings. In Europe usually only Asians offer some different chicken dishes which could include meat of other parts of this ratite.

Nobu, Budapest

Nobu, Japanese Restaurant, Budapest, Hungary

6,5 points

Many of you have heard of the fashionable chain of modern Japanese restaurant and Sushi place called Nobu. The most of Nobus are in top metropolises as Los Angeles, New York, London, Moscow and Tokyo and many more but some selected ones are in rather different places as Istanbul or Johannesburg. Really surprisingly there is a Nobu in Budapest which is a beautiful city but certainly not a cosmopolitan town. Located at the Kempinski Hotel and owned by no one else than film mogul Andy Vajna this restaurant is exceptional and a pearl among Budapest’s gastronomical offers.

Moscow is rich of interesting and good restaurants. I don’t know the reason why there isn’t any Michelin Star restaurant in Moscow. Sometimes I think this could have political reasons as there are very talented, creative and excellent chefs. I would say that there isn’t any other town in the world in which you find so many different, exclusively fascinating furnished, distinctly designed and decorated restaurants.

Bistrot Saint Sauveur, Restaurant, Le Cannet

Bistrot Saint Sauveur, Restaurant, Le Cannet, France

Although it will remain a miracle to me how someone can buy a real estate in this sprawl urban area of too much cement and too less green called Le Cannet I admit it it has a nice little old town center where you find another interesting and friendly restaurant close to Cannes called Bistrot Saint Sauveur.
